Don’t get me wrong, I love the exercise class I go to every Friday evening. Its a chance to head into town with a friend, we catch up on the week during the drive in, we dance and giggle our way through class and then head home like a pair of teenagers on a curfew. But last Friday, the day had been too nice, there was a hint of warmth in the air and the evening was looking like it could be a good one. So we jumped in the car and began our drive north but instead of carrying on into town, we turned right at the end of the Churchill barriers and headed to Deerness. I’m not overly familiar with this district I must admit. Although I’ve driven around it often, and my aunt and uncle have a farm in the area, I’ve never explored on foot. But I’m so glad we did. After seeing a post on Facebook, my friend had a clear idea of the area she wanted to visit, so we headed along the main road and continued until we reached the carpark for the Brough of Deerness.
This is where our walk began. We headed first to a spectacular hole in the ground the Gloup. I wish I had some amazing photos to share with you of this but unfortunately I don’t. The evening light was casting so much shadow into the Gloup that I struggled to take a decent shot. The only picture I did get is over exposed but I’m sharing it anyway as hey, its a memory, but hopefully it gives you a gist of things. There are safety rails around the top which allow you to safely experience the view so perhaps I’ll return with the children another day if I’m feeling brave enough!
The sky turned a lovely shade of pink as we walked back to the car although going back through my camera roll, I don’t seem to have captured that! Even with the layers upon layers that I was wearing – two vests, one cotton top, one wool jumper, a cotton hoody, a thin coat, a goose feather lined parka, hat and scarf, leggings AND jeans and three pairs socks to be exact – my hands were still frozen and by that stage all I could think of was returning to the warmth of the car. As we drove away, we spotted the cutest little lamb with one black leg! I’m pretty sure that’s wool and not some sort of elaborate leg cast but please feel free to set me straight as shepherdess I am not!
I hope you enjoyed my little tour of the Brough as much as I enjoyed being there! Thanks for reading x
