It was a cold Friday evening. The intermittent snow showers were bathing the town in an ethereal light. We drove through the streets not seeing a soul. After deciding that the best vantage point for capturing this light was to head to the highest hill on the Orkney mainland, known as Wideford, we arrived just after 8.30pm. I always enjoy this drive. Up, and up and up, through a tumbling farmyard, round bends and tight corners, I have that feeling of when I was a child, when the thought fills your head that the car may actually fall backwards (has that ever happened?) until you reach the top and the car lurches as it finds level ground. I always travel with my camera bag in the boot along with a spare coat and heavy boots (just in case) and I was glad of these when I stepped out. It was freezing. My friend was ill prepared but hugely good natured and skipped over the heather while I fumbled with icy cold fingers trying to dial in readings and exposures. She doesnt even look cold, does she?
We tried a few different angles, trying to capture her hair and dress blowing in the wind. The purple of her dress was beautifully complimented by the rustic tones of the heather and it billowed on cue. The direction of the wind caught her hair when she was facing towards the nearby village of Finstown with the evening sun setting over the hills in the west. The hills through Orphir were beautifully illuminated and Hoy, furthest away, with its peaks freshly covered in a blanket of white. Im happy that we captured both directions and its great to have these images to match our memories from that night.
Fiona was wearing a dress from the indie clothing store Figura . Their pieces are both practical and simple, are often one sized and easy fitting (think TOAST and COS) making it a go to for women who long to be comfortable whilst still looking stylish. Their items are lovingly crafted in 100% linen, are machine washable and easy to iron. My favourite part of this particular dress has to be the deep pockets – perfect for keeping ones hands warm when the temperature dips!
Have you been on any walks where you’ve not been dressed for the weather? I’d love to hear of them! Thanks so much for reading x
